At the World's Edge Festival 2026 has begun, bringing seven chamber-music programmes plus free AWE+ events to the Southern Lakes. Queenstown's Te Atamira hosts three of the main public programmes on 5, 9 and 11 October.
The festival is already under way
At the World's Edge runs across the Queenstown Lakes region from 3 to 16 October 2026. The public festival programme runs from 3 to 11 October, followed by AWE+ in Schools from 12 to 16 October. The 2026 theme is built around 'bounds and bridges' and the idea of lines that connect, divide and change. Seven main programmes are spread across Wānaka, Queenstown, Cromwell and Bannockburn, combining internationally recognised musicians with leading New Zealand artists in intimate venues rather than one single festival site.
Queenstown's Te Atamira has three main programmes
For visitors staying in Queenstown itself, the easiest dates to target are at Te Atamira. Strung is scheduled for Monday 5 October at 7:30pm, Radiance for Friday 9 October at 7:30pm, and The Line for Sunday 11 October at 2pm and 5pm. The Line is the final public programme of the festival. These are seated chamber-music performances, so travellers who want a particular session should book rather than assume door availability. The official programme is the best place to confirm running order and artist details.
The wider district is part of the experience
AWE is deliberately spread through the Southern Lakes rather than centred only in Queenstown. The opening weekend is at Rippon in Wānaka on 3 and 4 October. Woven moves to Cloudy Bay Shed in Cromwell on Thursday 8 October, while Unbroken is at Coronation Hall in Bannockburn on Saturday 10 October. That makes the festival useful for travellers already planning a Central Otago or Wānaka side trip, but it also means allowing realistic drive time and not treating every programme as a short Queenstown-CBD hop.
There are free AWE+ events as well
The paid concert series is only part of the programme. AWE+ adds free performances and community events, including an AWE Scholars Showcase at Te Atamira on Monday 5 October from 6:15pm to 7pm before Strung. The festival says its free programme is designed to make chamber music accessible beyond ticketed concerts. If you're curious about the festival but do not want to commit to a full evening performance, checking the AWE+ schedule is a sensible first step.
Tickets, prices and practical planning
The official programme lists standard adult tickets for most core programmes at NZ$70 and concession/student tickets at NZ$25, although individual sessions and special events can differ. Humanitix showed some sessions already sold out or waitlisted when checked on 4 October, while others still had tickets. Availability can change quickly once the festival is under way, so use Humanitix for the live ticket position. For Queenstown performances, Te Atamira is in the Frankton area rather than the CBD waterfront; allow time for transport, especially around evening traffic, and check the venue information supplied with your booking.
